Sodium Benzoate is widely used as a preservative for cosmetics pharmaceutical and food/beverage formulations. Benzoic acid or NaC7H5O2 is considered to be primarily an anti fungal but also shows some activity against bacteria. 

It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and exists in the form of white powder/granular solid and is water soluble. Often combined with Potassium Sorbate in low pH products it provides a synergistic preservative effect against yeast and mould.
