The artist dressed in light summer clothes looks at us questioningly with one blue eye and one green eye. For this self portrait Van Gogh used a cheap carrier andndash; cardboard andndash; on which he painted a layer of purple stripes. Unfortunately the pigment has faded considerably over time and only vague pink stripes can be seen on the shoulders; Van Gogh's careful colour composition has been lost.
